Paul Pogba has not been included in Manchester United’s matchday squad to play West Bromich Albion as he has picked up a knock on his ankle, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has confirmed.

The Frenchman is not fit to play in the game at Old Trafford on Saturday evening, but Solskjaer hopes Pogba will be able to return for United’s Champions League clash against Istanbul Basaksehir on Tuesday.

‘He [Pogba] tried to finish the last session but it [ankle] got worse and worse so he is unavailable today,’ the Norwegian boss said.

‘Hopefully he is OK for Tuesday [against Istanbul] but we’ll see.’

Meanwhile, summer signing Alex Telles makes his long-awaited Premier League debut for the Red Devils in place of the injured Luke Shaw.

‘It’s a great chance for him [Telles], he has been waiting a long time to play,’ Solskjaer added. ‘He is such a fantastic character and as a player he has great quality which we will get to see.’

Solskjaer has had to speak to Pogba privately regarding provocative comments made by France boss Didier Deschamps about the midfielder’s position at Old Trafford during the international break.

Deschamps claimed the 27-year-old, who has played a bit-part role for United this season, ‘cannot be happy with his playing time and positioning’.

And in his pre-match press conference on Friday, Solskjaer said: ‘I spoke to Paul today about it. Of course, he’s not happy when he’s not been playing and not playing really well.

‘He’s not been happy with his [club performances]. But Paul had a difficult season last season. Then he’s had Covid. But three games for France have helped him get his fitness and rhythm. I spoke to him and he feels stronger for it.

‘He plays in the same position for France as he does for us, so that scenario isn’t an issue.’
