Manchester United failed to conclude a deal for Sergio Reguilon after the Red Devils refused to accept Real Madrid’s demand to include a buyback clause in the Spaniard’s contract.

The 23-year-old looks set to join Tottenham after the north London club agreed a £27million fee with Real Madrid on Tuesday.

United had held talks to sign the left-back and had hoped to sign him for a reduced fee given his desire to move to Old Trafford but the club were unwilling to include a buyout clause in his contract.

United adopted a similar stance in January when Erling Haaland’s representatives attempted to include a buyout clause in any deal for him to move to Old Trafford and the club were unwilling to do so as it meant that long-term plans could not be made with the Norwegian in the side.

Spurs, though, clearly feel that the deal is suitable for them and it’s believed Real Madrid can enact a £37m buyback clause within the first two years of the defender’s deal in north London, according to AS.

Zinedine Zidane coached the left-back during his time as boss of Castilla and he has the likes of Ferland Mendy and Marcelo at his disposal in the Spanish capital.

Spurs’ summer business looks far from over and the club are looking to trump United for a second time by signing Gareth Bale.

The 31-year-old is keen on leaving the Bernabeu and he had been linked with a move to Old Trafford as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side look unlikely to sign first choice Jadon Sancho.

However, Bale’s agent has confirmed that the winger wants to return to Spurs and that talks are underway.

Gareth still loves Spurs,’ Jonathan Barnett told BBC Sport Wales. ‘We are talking [Spurs, Real and Bale’s camp]. It’s where he wants to go.’
