Chelsea looked into signing both RB Leipzig’s Dayot Upamecano and Bayern Munich’s David Alaba but ultimately decided not to pursue either player, according to reports.

The west Londoners have made bringing in a new centre-back and striker their top priorities when the transfer window reopens this summer as Thomas Tuchel looks to strengthen his squad.

Upamecano – who has a release clause of £40million – was one player the Blues had looked at, though Bayern Munich have confirmed they intend to trigger the buyout and have already agreed a deal with the Frenchman.

The 22-year-old is set to replace Alaba at the Allianz Arena, who will leave on a free transfer, and again Chelsea had looked into the possibility of signing the versatile defender but he looks set to join Real Madrid.

According to The Telegraph’s Matt Law, Chelsea backed away from a deal for the Austrian when they were informed of his wage demands, which they are unable to match.

Alaba reportedly wants £12m-a-season after tax and a long-term contract, with only Real prepared to pay close to that, while the player has also made it clear his preference is to play as a defensive midfielder.

Chelsea had genuine interest in Upamecano, meanwhile, but their scouts ‘weren’t fully convinced’ by him and did not want to get into a bidding war over his wages.

The Blues could yet raid RB Leipzig this summer, though, with reports in Germany claiming both Chelsea and Manchester United are looking at Upamecano’s centre-back partner Ibrahim Konate.

Chelsea have already signed Timo Werner and Kai Havertz from the Bundesliga recently, while manager Tuchel cut his teeth in the German top flight with Mainz and then Borussia Dortmund, and they could return to poach more of the league’s top stars.

In addition to Konate, Chelsea are also looking at BVB frontman Erling Haaland as they look to bring in a more traditional number nine.

However, Dortmund have little desire to sell the Norwegian goal machine until his buyout clause becomes active in 2022 and Chelsea fear his wage demands and the presence of agent Mino Raiola could prove to be very problematic for their hopes of landing the striker.
