Leon Edwards’ long wait for a UFC fight could be extended still further, but not if he can help it, as he calls out Jorge Masvidal for a scrap on 20 January in Abu Dhabi.

Edwards has not fought since his unanimous decision victory over Rafael dos Anjos in July 2019 with the global pandemic ruining proposed bouts with Tyron Woodley and then welterweight champion Kamaru Usman.

The Brit was then due to meet rising star Khamzat Chimaev in December, before that was postponed to 20 January, and now the unbeaten Russian has pulled out for undisclosed reasons.

It will be 18 months since his last fight when 20 January rolls around and Edwards is desperate to end his lengthy violence drought.

The 29-year-old has called on the UFC to provide him with a replacement opponent, specifically calling on Jorge Masvidal to make the trip to Fight Island.

‘Rest up Khamzat, I’m sure ill see you soon. But I want to fight January 20th on the island @danawhite @seanshelby @ufc let’s make it happen,’ Edwards tweeted.

‘Where that bitch Jorge at?’

Masvidal’s last fight was on short notice in Abu Dhabi when he jetted in to take on Usman for the welterweight strap in July.

His title bid was unsuccessful, losing an unanimous decision, and his next bout is unclear, although Colby Covington has been regularly mooted as his next opponent.

Another trip to Abu Dhabi on short notice to take on Edwards seems unlikely and it may be that one of the other welterweights on the card could step into the main event, most likely Neil Magny, who is due to fight Michael Chiesa.

Masvidal and Edwards have appeared on a collision course since their backstage altercation at UFC London in 2019, which saw Gamebred assault Rocky after they both won in the cage.

Speaking in September, Edwards said Masvidal was ducking him and was looking for a rematch with Nate Diaz instead.

‘I want the fight,’ Edwards told MMA Fighting. ‘The UFC wanted the fight.

‘They offered it to him and he turned it down. He said he’d rather fight Nate Diaz.

‘I don’t understand it. He claims he wants to get back to the title shot and fight for a world championship. I don’t understand what fighting a person like Nate Diaz will get you?

‘I don’t know, I don’t know where his head’s at. I don’t know what the f*** he’s doing but I’m here, I’m ready. I’m willing to go.’
