Troy Deeney believes Aaron Wan-Bissaka ‘has to be’ in Gareth Southgate’s England squad for the Euros this summer and insists he should be starting against the world’s strongest nations.

Southgate has a ridiculously deep pool of right-back talent at his disposal, with Reece James, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Kieran Trippier and Kyle Walker among those fighting for a spot.

Chelsea ace James started against San Marino, while Manchester City defender Walker was given the nod in the 2-0 win over Albania on Sunday.’

But Watford striker Deeney feels James was lucky to be in this squad ahead of Manchester United right-back Wan-Bissaka, who is yet to be capped by England.

‘It’s not personal, just an opinion; I don’t think Reece James goes over Wan-Bissaka,’ he told talkSPORT. ‘I don’t think he should have been in this squad over Wan-Bissaka.

He doesn’t always start for Chelsea, that’s a main (reason). But I just think Wan-Bissaka is so good defensively.

‘You can say what you want about (Wan-Bissaka) with the ball, but when it comes to the nitty-gritty you’re going to need someone who will clamp down on their winger, know his role, do his job, get the ball and give it to the better players – that’s what you need in those situations.

‘I’d back (Wan-Bissaka) or Kyle Walker because he’s so fast. But I’d have Wan-Bissaka.’

‘I think we have to assess it,’ Deeney added. ‘For me, Wan Bissaka has to be in there in the squad.

‘He didn’t make it. Trent Alexander-Arnold didn’t make it.

‘I just think if you’re playing up against France and you want someone to take on one of their wingers, Wan-Bissaka is the man.

‘He’s the best defender we have at the right-back option.

‘It’s a real tough one because you could make arguments for everyone to be starting.

‘Look at Lingard and the season he’s having… people could say he deserves to be playing.

‘And we’re forgetting Sancho hasn’t even travelled. The squad is ridiculous at this moment in time.

‘A nice problem to have but I’ll certainly give all the problems to Gareth and watch from the side and say he should have done this and that. It’s easier from here.’
