Tottenham Hotspur have been fined and manager Jose Mourinho has been given a suspended one-match ban from European fixtures by UEFA.

The punishment has been dished out because Spurs were late to kick-off in their clash with Royal Antwerp on 29 October and it wa deemed that Mourinho was responsible for the delay.

The club has been fined 25,000 euros (£23,000) by UEFA’s control, ethics and disciplinary body (CEDB), and another 3,000 euros (£2,700) for breaching UEFA’s equipment regulations.

Mourinho’s ban has been deferred for a year, meaning he will not actually face the punishment unless he breaks the rules again in that time.

Spurs lost the match 1-0 in Belgium, turning in a pretty turgid display in the Europa League, but they have since gone on to win their next three matches.

The Portuguese made nine changes to his team for the Antwerp meeting and made it clear after the game that he would try not to rely on his squad players again.

‘You know what our best team is,’ he said after the loss. ‘I always like to think the players deserve an opportunity.

‘We have a big squad with lots of good players. It’s my responsibility to give them opportunities but it’s also their opportunity to catch the chance with both hands and ask for more.

‘Tonight shows my future choices are going to be very easy.’

Celtic have also been punished by the CEDB, fined 7,000 euros for improper conduct during their Europa League game against Lille.
