Thomas Tuchel has praised N’Golo Kante for his performance in Chelsea’s 1-1 draw with Southampton on Saturday.

Chelsea lost ground in the top-four race as Mason Mount’s penalty cancelled out Takumi Minamino’s first-half opener for the Saints.

Tuchel was unhappy with Callum Hudson-Odoi and Tammy Abraham during Chelsea’s draw, and criticised the winger over his ‘energy’ and ‘attitude’.

However, the Chelsea manager was pleased with Kante’s contribution in midfield.

‘N’Golo was excellent, he helped us a lot with his energy and his ball wins were incredible,’ Tuchel told Chelsea TV.

‘But even from there we need to use these ball wins better to play counter attacks, to use our speed behind the last line. This is the story for today’s game.

‘In general I’m very, very happy with Edou [Edouard Mendy] and the back five, the three in defence and the two midfielders, Reece [James] and Marcos [Alonso] on the wings, but we lacked the offensive in the last 20 metres.

‘The momentum was not there so we lacked chances and when we had the chances we lacked precision.’

Tuchel also believes Mount is capable of being ‘more decisive’ for Chelsea.

‘I’m happy that he scored, it was not an easy game,’ said the Chelsea manager.

‘He was also involved in the offensive actions with this unlucky decision making.

‘He can be more decisive for us, I know that he wants to be more decisive and there were a lot of opportunities he also missed.

‘So, to win the penalty and take it in a situation where it was absolutely necessary, I’m very, very happy he took responsibility and that he scored, it was a good sign.’
