Thomas Muller lost his cool with a reporter who laughed during an interview after Bayern Munich’s shock exit in the DFB Pokal to Holstein Kiel on Wednesday evening.

The Champions League holders were dumped out of their domestic cup by the second-division side, which is the earliest they’ve exited the competition since the 2000-01 campaign.

Despite Bayern taking the lead twice through Serge Gnabry and Leroy Sane, the game ended 2-2 after 90 minutes and Holstein Kiel beat the Bundesliga champions 6-5 on penalties with Marc Roca missing the crucial spot-kick.

But after the game, Muller was irked by the post-match interviewer for German broadcaster ARD, Valeska Homburg, who briefly laughed when asking him about the mood in Bayern’s dressing room following the defeat.

Muller replied angrily: ‘What do you think? You are laughing here now.’

Homburg attempted to clarify that she wasn’t laughing at Bayern but Muller interrupted with: ‘Of course you laughed.’

Homburg then asked Muller if there was any attempts to explain Bayern’s early cup exit and the forward replied: ‘No, there was nothing at all.

‘The mood is what you would expect. We are of course down, you can of course imagine that. That the mood is not good.’

Speaking after the game, Bayern boss Hansi Flick said: ‘It’s a shock.

‘We are extremely disappointed. Their first goal was the same pattern as the last few games. We have to close gaps in the centre, and we didn’t do that.

‘For their second goal we didn’t have enough men inside the box and didn’t defend one against one.’
