Sergio Romero has asked Manchester United’s hierarchy to be released from his contract following his failed exit on deadline day, according to reports.

The 33-year-old was wanted by Everton on loan in the closing stages of the transfer window but United stood firm over their £8 million asking price.

Everton were willing to offer a £2 million fee and to cover the goalkeeper’s £100,000-a-week salary in full but United were demanding a permanent sale and Carlo Ancelotti’s side ended up signing Robin Olsen on loan from Roma instead.

According to The Sun, Romero has now requested that his current deal with United is terminated by the end of the month, which would allow him to join an MLS club on a free transfer.

The report claims that Romero is even willing to give up £1.5m he would be owed if United did cancel his deal.

Romero has fallen even further down the pecking order at United following Dean Henderson’s return to Old Trafford after his impressive loan spell with Sheffield United.

The Argentine has been left out United’s Champions League squad, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer opting to pick Lee Grant ahead of him.

Romero was United’s first choice in the Carabao Cup and the Europa League last season but was surprisingly dropped for semi-finals in both competitions.

It’s understood that several United players have been unhappy with the treatment Romero has received.
