Former Manchester United skipper Roy Keane has told Harry Maguire he must lead by example every day – in training and matches – after taking over the captaincy.

The summer signing from Leicester City will wear the United armband following Ashley Young’s January move to Inter Milan, following in the footsteps of countless legends of the club.

Keane wore the armband in between Eric Cantona and Gary Neville, and although he is wary of new arrivals being given the captaincy so soon he believes Maguire is a very good fit.

Asked if Maguire is the right choice, Keane said on Sky Sports: ‘I think so. I’m always concerned when a new player comes to the club and is given the captaincy.

‘To me, it doesn’t say a lot about the other senior players at the club.

‘But he’s an experienced player. He’s a good age, he’s obviously going to be a regular in the team and he comes across as a pretty decent lad.

‘So, yeah, it’s a pretty sensible decision and he’ll have a big part to play certainly.’

Asked if he had any advice for Maguire, having done the job himself for so long, Keane continued: ‘It’s always about the team. Don’t be distracted by the captaincy, enjoy it.

‘You don’t necessarily need the armband to be a leader but he seems very proud of it.

‘It is a big responsibility, but I always just tried to focus on being the best player in training, the best player at weekend and hopefully then the rest of the players would follow.’
