Phil Foden warned Manchester City’s title rivals that they had returned to their best and would be ‘pushing’ until the end of the season to get their hands on the Premier League trophy after the side’s 1-0 victory over Brighton.

The young England midfielder produced another outstanding individual display on Wednesday night and struck right on half-time at the Etihad with a controlled finish from the edge of the box to take his goals tally to four for the top-flight campaign.

Riyad Mahrez, Ilkay Gundogan and Bernardo Silva all spurned chances to extend City’s lead in the second half and Raheem Sterling ballooned a late penalty well over the crossbar after Sanchez brought down Kevin De Bruyne.

City, last year’s runners-up, kept hold of their advantage to secure all three points and move up to third in the table and Foden declared that his team as a genuine force in the title race during his post-match interview with BT Sport.

Asked whether City were back to their best after a shaky start to the season, Foden told BT Sport: ‘Yeah, definitely.

‘I feel like we’re back to our best. We’ll definitely take confidence from the last few results now but today I still feel like we could have done better.

‘We dug deep to get the win so overall I’m very proud of the team, how we kept going until the final whistle so overall it’s a great result.

The 20-year-old added: ‘We know we have a game in hand now and we just have to think about the next opponent and not too far ahead.

‘We just want to keep going with this form and pushing to win the Premier League, hopefully.’

Foden, City’s top scorer with eight goals in all competitions this season, said he was pleased to find the net with his weaker right foot.

‘They defended really well, they had a good game-plan and they made it difficult for us to break them down,’ he continued.

‘So to get the goal just before half-time was really important and it ended up being the winning goal so I’m delighted.

‘I don’t score many with my right foot so when they come along, I enjoy it so it was a good goal.’

On being City’s leading scorer this season, Foden said: ‘I always like to score goals and be there in the box.

‘I just want to keep scoring goals and I’m enjoying it at the moment.’

City have found their feet after a rocky start to the campaign and the side’s defeat of Brighton means they are riding a 14-match unbeaten streak in all competitions.

Guardiola’s men will hope to close the gap on Manchester United and Liverpool when they entertain Crystal Palace at the Etihad this weekend.
