Kevin De Bruyne has been ruled out of Manchester City’s heavyweight Premier League clash against Arsenal with an injury he picked up while on international duty with Belgium.

The Royal Belgian Football Association cited a fitness issue after the City playmaker was substituted after 73 minutes of Sunday’s UEFA Nations League loss to England at Wembley last week.

City have have made a mediocre start to the new season having been thrashed 5-2 at home by Leicester, while they also dropped two points against promoted Leeds United at Elland Road.

Guardiola’s side face rapidly improving Arsenal tomorrow before commencing their Champions League campaign against Porto in midweek.

‘Kevin is out unfortunately but the rest of the players came back well,’ confirmed Guardiola at his pre-match press conference. ‘I don’t think [Kevin’s injury] is much but he will be out for the next games I think.’

While City will be without arguably their most influential player, Sergio Aguero, out since June with a knee injury, is in contention to return against Arsenal, against whom he boasts a formidable record of 11 goals in 17 games.

‘Sergio is training well and we are happy,’ Guardiola added. ‘Every team needs a striker and we played without them. He has been training good and we’re happy to see him back on the pitch after a long time.’

City have been hampered by not only the absence of Aguero, but Gabriel Jesus as well. Guardiola has been forced to rely on Raheem Sterling in a central role, while 17-year-old Liam Delap has featured twice already this season.

On Jesus, Guardiola said: ‘There are some muscle injuries you can take a risk for and others you cannot. He has an injury in the front part of his leg.

‘If there is another incident we would lose him for a long time. I don’t know [how long he will be out for].’
