Paul Scholes is looking forward to seeing Diogo Dalot back at Manchester United in the summer after being impresed with the full-back playing against the Red Devils for AC Milan on Thursday night.

The 21-year-old is on loan at Milan for the season and was able to play for the Italian side in the Europa League last 16 clash at Old Trafford.

The match ended 1-1 after Amad Diallo opened the scoring for United before a last minute Simon Kjaer header gave Milan the advantage in the tie.

Dalot was playing on the left flank, as opposed to his normal position at right-back, and Scholes is keen to see him come back to Manchester and challenge Aaron Wan-Bissaka for his place.

The United legend recognises that Wan-Bissaka is a superb defender, but Dalot offers something more going forward from full-back.

‘He does seem a really good lad, speaks well,’ Scholes told BT Sport. ‘He’s done the right thing to get games at a big club. That will do him the world of good.

‘He played in an unfamiliar position tonight, on that left side, but even his crossing with his left foot was brilliant. I thought defensively he did everything he had to do.

‘Where does he stand now? I think he’ll come back at the end of the season.

‘Pre-season will be big for him. It’s time for him to really perform in those pre-season games. Put a bit of pressure on Wan-Bissaka.

‘He’s different to Wan-Bissaka. We know what a great defender Wan-Bissaka is. I think he’s got more quality going forward. It’s just a decision for the manager and what he wants.’

Dalot admitted that it was strange playing against his parent club, having joined the Red Devils in 2018 from Porto, but is loving playing regularly for AC Milan.

He has made 21 appearances for Milan so far this season, having only made 35 in the last three campaigns combined at United.

‘It was a mixed feeling to be honest with you,’ said the Portuguese star. ‘When I first walked the pitch before the game I’m used to being on this side. It’s a mixed feeling.

‘I miss this place as well. I have great memories here with this club but today I was fighting on the other side for this badge.

‘This is who I am. I want to be improving everyday, I think I have a lot to improve..

‘This is something that needs game time. This season I am having what I need and it’s fantastic.’
