Paul Pogba has warned his Manchester United teammates they need to learn from their semi-final defeats and nail down the ‘small details’ that are the difference between winning silverware and being also-rans.

The Red Devils suffered their fourth consecutive defeat at the semi-final stage under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer on Wednesday night, losing 2-0 at Old Trafford in the Carabao Cup against rivals Manchester City.

United have now failed at the penultimate hurdle in the FA Cup, Europa League and Carabao Cup twice and Pogba was very disheartened by the manner of the defeat, having been undone by two set-pieces.

Asked if he was disappointed to lose yet another semi-final, Pogba told MUTV: ‘Yeah of course, because it’s not the first one as well against City at home.

‘So we are disappointed with the result obviously and with the two goals on set-pieces. Then after it can go both ways.

‘We lost today and it’s not the first one, like I said. It’s very annoying to lose because there is always a trophy behind all this and we have to do better. We have to do better for sure.’

Asked if it feels like there is still one little thing missing which is preventing United from getting over the line, Pogba continued: ‘Exactly. It’s details.

‘Details make the difference all the time and you know when it’s a big game like this, details, set-pieces, we lost on this. We have to learn.

‘We have to learn because it’s not the first time. We have to learn. We have to get through this as well and then after this there’s big games coming up. After tonight, tomorrow we go again.’

Although they exited the Carabao Cup, United can go three points clear of Liverpool at the top of the Premier League table if they win their game in hand against Burnley and Pogba knows the team cannot get too down about losing to City.

He added: ‘Today we know we lost and there’s no time to be disappointed for a week because we know where we are, we’re in a good position now.

‘It’s difficult, it’s going to be difficult, and we learn from those games and hopefully it will help us to get through, to get better, to have positive results in the next games.’
