Ole Gunnar Solskjaer reveals Harry Maguire injury concern ahead of Newcastle clash

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has confirmed Harry Maguire is an injury doubt ahead of Manchester United’s Premier League match against Newcastle United on Saturday.

The world’s most expensive centre-half has endured a torrid few months, both on and off the pitch, and the most testing spell of his career to date was capped by an error-strewn performance for England in midweek, capped by a first-half dismissal against Denmark.

Maguire’s poor form has partly been attributed to the fallout of his arrest in the summer after he was involved in an altercation with Greek police following a night out on the island of Mykonos.

The 27-year-old suffered a barrage of criticism after United were hammered 6-1 at Old Trafford by Tottenham prior to the international break, but he is unlikely to get the opportunity to immediately redeem himself with Solskjaer revealing the defender sustained a knock on international duty.

While former United star Rio Ferdinand believes a period out of the limelight would be of benefit to Maguire, Solskjaer has backed his under-fire captain to come good as soon as he is fit and able to play again.

‘You’re in the highlights all the time and when Harry is part of the England team that beats number one ranked Belgium it’s just a normal day and you get the headlines when you get a sending off,’ Solskjaer said at his pre-match press conference.

‘That’s football for you. There are so many ups and downs, have to deal with it individually and as a group.

‘Harry has got great resilience, I know he’ll bounce back, I know he wants to play and work his way out of the last couple of games he’s been criticised.’

‘He picked up a knock just before he came off. I’m just hopeful he’ll be fit. We had a look at him yesterday and will give him a test today.’
