Ole Gunnar Solskjaer confirms Harry Maguire decision and sends warning to Man Utd stars ahead of Burnley clash

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has brushed off fears Manchester United captain Harry Maguire could get himself suspended for the side’s clash with Liverpool and says the centre-back will ‘definitely’ play against Burnley on Tuesday night.

Maguire has picked up four bookings in 16 Premier League appearances this season and another yellow card would rule him out of the Red Devils’ all-important trip to Anfield on Sunday, a game which could prove decisive in this season’s enthralling title race.

But Solskjaer has no doubts about selecting the England international at the heart of his defence given victory at Turf Moor is at the forefront of his mind, rather than this weekend’s heavyweight encounter on Merseyside.

‘Harry is playing, definitely – that’s for sure,’ Solskjaer confirmed ahead of United’s match at Burnley, where they can go three points clear of champions Liverpool at the top of the table.

‘You can only take three points from the game that you are playing in.

‘You cannot put your eyes on games beyond this one.’

Solskjaer urged United’s squad to ignore talk that they could be genuine challengers this term and said ‘relaxing’ at such an early stage of the campaign could have disastrous consequences.

‘I would like to think that we go into this game, not thinking about where we will end up Tuesday night in the table but where we can end up in the table in May,’ the United head coach added.

‘That’s what matters. You accumulate the points throughout the season so if at one point you think, “Ah, we’ve made it now, we have cracked it” and you relax, that is when it’s going to hit you back.

‘So we are very focused. We have some good characters in the team, the dressing room is louder, it’s more vocal.’

Bruno Fernandes joined United last winter and has since transformed the club’s fortunes but Solskjaer is expecting a quiet end to the January transfer window this time around.

Asked about the possibility of big-money arrivals this month, the Norwegian replied: ‘The situation is different now from a year ago so it’s unlikely something is going to happen.

‘But you’re right. Bruno came in and has had a great impact, made us a better team and he’s become a better player as well.

‘If there was something out there that was nailed on I wouldn’t say no but it’s likely nothing is going to happen.’
