Mikel Arteta sends warning to Arsenal midfield after defending Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta insists the team need to share out the goals and that there’s too much responsibility on Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s shoulders.

The Gabon international has managed just four goals for the Gunners this term and his form has nosedived as Arteta’s men have struggled in front of goal.

The Gunners recorded their third win on the bounce with a resounding 4-0 victory against West Brom on Saturday, though Aubameyang was not able to get on the scoresheet.

Kieran Tierney, Bukayo Saka and a brace from Alexandre Lacazette gave Arsenal victory and Arteta warned after the game that the side need to do more to alleviate the pressure on Aubameyang to score the goals.

‘We can’t keep putting all the weight on Auba’s shoulders to score the goals,’ said Arteta.

‘We need contributions. The midfielders need to score more and give more assists, and we need goals from our wingers as well. Laca is in great form and has scored five goals in his last four games, which is what we need from our strikers.

‘Auba had some chances today to score and it was the same in the last game or so, but I am so pleased because in the final third we looked lively and there was a lot of movement.

‘There is good energy, there is a real purpose and everybody is playing forwards. It’s like we are free to play there and the understanding is allowing us to generate a lot of things there.’

Arsenal take renewed confidence into their next fixture, with Newcastle United set to travel to the Emirates on Saturday for the FA Cup third round.

Arteta is likely to make several changes as he will prioritise the visit of Crystal Palace just three days later, despite the club being holders of the cup.

Arsenal’s victory moved them up into 11th, three points short of rivals Chelsea.
