Arsenal outcast Mesut Ozil is in talks with MLS side DC United and could finally be on the verge of leaving the Emirates after being frozen out by manager Mikel Arteta.

The German playmaker has not featured for the Gunners since March when the Premier League season was halted due to the coronavirus pandemic, with Arsenal’s hierarchy keen to get their highest earner off the books.

Although Arteta has left the door open for Ozil to be brought in from the cold this month – when he can be reregistered for the squads he was left out of – Arsenal would still prefer to offload him as soon as possible.

The 32-year-old earns £350,000-a-week – which works out at around £9m until the end of his contract – and has always maintained that he intends to see out his contract until the summer.

Now Football.London report that Arsenal have been given a ray of hope that Ozil could leave after he entered negotiations with DC United over a lucrative package.

In addition to a massive salary, the MLS side have offered to help expand his M10 brand in the United States.

On top of that, DC United’s offer also includes the introduction of Ozil’s 39 Steps Coffee brand at their Audi Field stadium as well as other merchandise opportunities.

The Washington-based franchise have lacked a poster boy for the club since Wayne Rooney’s exit and intend to make Ozil the ‘face’ of the team going forward, with the playmaker free to talk to foreign clubs about a move now he is in the final six months of his contract.

Arteta was recently asked if Ozil could return to the Arsenal squad this month, saying: ‘We will see what happens in the transfer window and we will assess at the end of that.’

Arsenal are believed to be in the market for a new creative midfielder in the January window – with Norwich’s Emi Buendia and Borussia Dortmund’s Julian Brandt on their shortlist – but could be forced into a U-turn over Ozil if they fail to bring in reinforcements.

The World Cup winner rejected the chance to leave Arsenal on loan over the summer despite the club offering to pay 50% of his wages, and a potential move to DC United – or any other club – is most likely to happen once his contract has expired.
