Manchester United star Marcus Rashford believes 18-year-old midfielder Hannibal Mejbri could be the next youngster to make the step up the first-team.

Rashford, Paul Pogba, Mason Greenwood and Scott McTominay have risen through the academy ranks to become regulars in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s first-team with Dean Henderson, Brandon Williams and Axel Tuanzebe in the squad pushing for starts.

Plenty more are hoping to make the step up and 17-year-old forward Shola Shoretire and 18-year-old winger Amad Diallo were both named in the senior squad for Thursday’s Europa League clash with Real Sociedad, with the latter coming off the bench to make his senior debut late on.

Shoretire, Diallo and Mejbri were all promoted to train with the first-team last week and speaking in a Twitter Q&A on Friday evening, Rashford tipped the young Frenchman to make the breakthrough.

Mejbri arrived at United from AS Monaco for an initial fee of £5m in 2019, scoring four goals in 18 starting appearances for the Under-23s.

The trio of Shoretire, Diallo and Mejbri will train regularly with the first-team and drop down to play games for Neil Wood’s Under-23 side this season with Solskjaer excited to see the club’s most promising youngsters embark on the next stage of their development.

‘We’ve moved Shola [Shoretire] up with us. Hannibal [Mejbri] will join us and we will keep them with us for a while,’ Solskjaer told a press conference last week.

‘I think it’s the next step of their development and we’ve just got to take the hit on them when they play for the reserves.

‘They have to travel by themselves, so they move into our bubble. I think that’s a nice step for them and well deserved because they’ve done really well.’
