Manchester United goalkeeper Dean Henderson is planning to leave the club on loan on January after failing to displace David De Gea as the club’s first choice.

The 23-year-old returned to Old Trafford in the summer after a two-year loan spell with Sheffield United, where his performances earned him a call-up to the England set-up.

Henderson’s decision to return was based partly on the major dip in form suffered by De Gea in the last 18 months, with Henderson believing he had a one-shot chance of capitalising on the Spaniard’s displays.

However, Henderson’s return has had the opposite effect on De Gea, with the former Atletico Madrid stopper recapturing his best form this season due to the added competition on his place.

Henderson felt a return to United would boost his chances of being named England’s no.1 but the goalkeeper is now concerned about his spot in the squad and knows he needs first-team football to guarantee a spot under Gareth Southgate.

The young goalkeeper has therefore decided he needs a loan move in the January transfer to boost his chances of making England’s squad and the Sun claim Henderson is looking at potential clubs to join.

De Gea made two fine stops as he kept a clean sheet in United’s 1-0 win against West Brom on Saturday.

Following a dismal start to the season, United have regained some form and their win moves them to within three points of the top four.

Everton were linked with a move for Henderson in the summer, while Chelsea were also said to be interested.

Frank Lampard’s side are unlucky to make a move following their signing of Edouard Mendy and United would rather not help a direct rival like Everton.

Henderson’s options are therefore limited but Leeds United have been touted as a possible destination.
