Jesse Lingard may not be leaving Manchester United after all this summer with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer very impressed with the midfielder and willing to bring him back into the first-team fold.

The 28-year-old found game time hard to come by at Old Trafford and was forced to leave the club on loan in January, joining West Ham until the end of the season.

Despite his lack of minutes in recent seasons, Lingard hit the ground running with five goals and two assists in his first seven Premier League appearances for the Irons.

His form has been so impressive he even earned a recall to the England national team and was named Man of the Match for his performance against San Marino on Thursday.

Lingard was widely expected to make a permanent move to east London for a fee of around £15million, but now The Sun report that United have had a rethink.

Solskjaer has been so blown away by Lingard’s return to form he is willing to bring him back in from the cold and feels he could be a valuable part of the squad.

Despite freezing Lingard out, the Norwegian coach has always been a big fan of the midfielder and is delighted to see him full of confidence once again.

United are even considering offering Lingard a new contract, with his current £100,000-a-week deal due to expire in 2022 when he would be able to leave the club on a free transfer.

A new contract would allow Solskjaer to bring Lingard back into his first-team plans as well as preserving his transfer value, while it would even allow them to loan him out again further down the line if he again found himself on the periphery at Old Trafford.

West Ham are desperate to keep Lingard and were hoping to land him permanently for around £15m, though United would now expect an offer in excess of £20m if they are to let him go.

Lingard has added value for United as a home grown player, while Juan Mata’s potential departure – the Spaniard only has a few months left on his contract – would leave United with room for a creative player.
