Manchester United have reportedly placed Lille’s Sven Botman on their shortlist of centre-back targets ahead of the summer transfer window.

The Red Devils will look to close the gap on fierce rivals Manchester City by bolstering their options up front and at the back ahead of the new season.

Borussia Dortmund sensation Erling Haaland is thought to be United’s number one priority in attack but club officials have several options in mind at centre-half, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer keen for a marquee signing to partner captain Harry Maguire.

According to Fabrizio Romano, speaking on his ‘Here We Go’ podcast, Jules Kounde, 22, is among the ‘most appreciated’ players on United’s radar after an outstanding campaign at the heart of Sevilla’s defence.

United have been closely monitoring Kounde’s performances for much of the season and are confident the young Frenchman would be the ‘perfect’ addition. However, Romano claims Sevilla’s eye-watering €80million (£68m) asking price is ‘complicating’ a possible deal.

The Premier League giants have therefore been forced to explore alternatives in the transfer market and highly-rated Lille star Botman, 21, is high up on their list of potential targets.

Botman was heavily linked with both Liverpool and Tottenham in the January transfer window and is regarded as one of the finest young central defenders in Ligue 1.

But United’s interest remains just that for the time being and the Old Trafford outfit are yet to make a bid or even enter into negotiations for the Netherlands Under-21 international.

Real Madrid and France ace Raphael Varane continues to be linked and Villarreal’s Pau Torres has been offered to United on a number of occasions.

It remains to be seen which centre-back United will look to prioritise but Romano insists the club are intent on strengthening in the position and there are several opportunities and avenues to pursue over the coming months.
