Man Utd news: Nemanja Matic mocks Bruno Fernandes over Cristiano Ronaldo’s non-goal

Nemanja Matic left a cheeky present for teammate Bruno Fernandes on his return to Manchester United’s training ground as he teased him over Cristiano Ronaldo’s controversially disallowed goal.

The Portugal captain flung his armband on the ground and stormed off the pitch before full-time of his side’s 2-2 draw against Serbia on Saturday evening, having felt he had been denied a clear goal.

With the scores tied and hosts Serbia a man down, Ronaldo latched onto a cross deep into stoppage time and prodded the ball towards goal – only for Nikola Milenkovic to race back and clear it.

But replays appeared to confirm that the ball had already crossed the line and both Ronaldo and the entire Portugal team were left fuming as there was no goal-line technology in Belgrade and the officials all missed it.

To make matters worse for Fernandes, he was shown a yellow card earlier in the match which rules him out of Tuesday evening’s World Cup qualifier against Luxembourg due to suspension.

That has allowed the 26-year-old to return to Manchester early and get a rare week off – though he will not have been too impressed with what was waiting on his locker door when he returned.

Serbian Matic – who retired from international duty last year – had printed out and sellotaped a picture of the incident to Fernandes’ locker, but photoshopped the goal-line so it was a foot further back.

Alongside the picture, Matic also tagged both Fernandes and Ronaldo on Instagram and wrote: ‘Just on the line. Is it all clear now?’

Ronaldo was livid after his effort was not awarded and was booked for dissent – with suggestions he could face further punishment – but Portugal boss Fernando Santos is standing by the forward and says there is zero danger he will lose the captaincy over his outburst.

‘Yes, he will keep the armband. Forever,’ said Santos. ‘Cristiano is a national example. ‘If he had offended the manager, his teammates or the federation in a thoughtless attitude, then we would have to address the situation. But nothing like that happened.

‘It was a moment of huge frustration. And we are talking about a player who is unbeatable when it comes to his eagerness to win.

‘Nobody will say now that his reaction was beautiful, but there’s no point to discuss if Cristiano should remain the captain. That’s something I want to be very clear about.’
