Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Rio Ferdinand both singled out Mason Greenwood for praise after Manchester United’s hard-fought Premier League victory over Brighton.

The Red Devils came from behind to beat Brighton on Sunday evening thanks to second-half goals from Marcus Rashford and Greenwood.

Former Manchester United forward Danny Welbeck gave Brighton an early lead at at Old Trafford and the hosts struggled to find an equaliser before Rashford beat Robert Sanchez on 62 minutes.

With seven minutes remaining, Greenwood glanced Paul Pogba’s mistimed shot into the back of the net to give Manchester United their 17th win of the season.

‘Mason was mature,’ Manchester United manager Solskjaer said. ‘Today he was one of our brightest players.

‘He was clean, he was tidy and he got the goal. It’s a header inside the six-yard box and that’s what we need more from Mason.

‘It’s always difficult to play Brighton. We have had good results and we’ve had to earn them the hard way. We managed to find a way in the second half.’

Former United and England defender Ferdinand added on BT Sport: ‘They struggled in the first half but they improved and got the job done. It wasn’t perfect but they got the win.

‘The goal from Greenwood, that’s a striker’s instinct, this kid is a striker.

‘What I was pleased about with Greenwood was his all-round game. His movement and the way he retained possession was great.

‘He’s making unbelievable runs. He needs to keep making those runs because his team-mates will find him eventually.

‘For someone so young to be doing that when he’s not in a rich vein of form in terms of goals tells me a lot about him. He’s got the right attitude.’

Manchester United’s victory gives them an 11-point cushion in the battle for a top-four place with eight games remaining.

Brighton, meanwhile, remain 16th in the Premier League, six points ahead of Fulham, who occupy the final relegation place.

‘There were a lot of positives,’ Brighton boss Graham Potter said. ‘We’re sore because we haven’t got anything from the game but the way we handled the opposition, there’s a lot of good things.

‘We’ve got eight huge games left but we’re in a good place in terms of performances, so we’ve got to carry that forward. We have to keep working.’
