Man Utd legend Roy Keane compares Phil Foden to Paul Scholes after England beat Iceland

Roy Keane hailed Phil Foden following his ‘excellent performance’ in England’s 4-0 victory over Iceland and likened the youngster to his legendary former Manchester United team-mate Paul Scholes.

Foden, 20, made the headlines for all the wrong reasons after England’s last Nations League clash with Iceland but the Manchester City attacking midfielder went some way to righting his wrongs on Wednesday night.

Declan Rice and Mason Mount netted in the first half to give Gareth Southgate’s men a comfortable lead and Foden killed off a ten-man Iceland with a pair of driven strikes in the dying moments at Wembley.

Jack Grealish was named man of the match for a second time in as many games for his country but Keane chose to single out Foden’s display while discussing the Three Lions’ win in the ITV Sport studio.

‘Two excellent goals. I loved his first goal, we’re talking about making runs in the box, right at the end a bit like what Paul Scholes used to do,’ the ex-United and Republic of Ireland midfielder said.

‘Sometimes it’s about standing still and that’s football intelligence and, again, he’s 20 years of age. It was an excellent performance.

‘He’s made a mistake a couple of months ago but he’ll be delighted with that.

‘He’s a great prospect.’

Former England striker Ian Wright said Foden’s showing was another ‘massive plus’ for Southgate heading into next summer’s delayed European Championships.

‘It’s a fantastic performance from him,’ Wright said.

‘You’re pleased to see him come back from what he’s come back from simply because you just want a young player to be able to do that in peace which he was given.

‘The way he picks up the ball in these areas, we know what he’s capable of doing as he does it for Manchester City.

‘It’s a massive plus for another England player that can create because that’s what you want.’
