Paul Scholes has branded Chelsea as ‘toothless’ under new boss Thomas Tuchel and does not expect Manchester United to have any problems against them when they meet next in the Premier League.

The Red Devils remain in second place in the table after seeing off Newcastle on Sunday, with Marcus Rashford, Daniel James and Bruno Fernandes all netting in a 3-1 victory.

United take on Real Sociedad in the second leg of their Europa League last-32 tie on Thursday and then travel to Stamford Bridge on Sunday for a challenging clash against a resurgent Chelsea side.

Although the Blues could only draw against Southampton at the weekend, they had won their previous five matches in all competitions before that and given some much-improved performances under Tuchel, dominating possession in all their matches.

They are yet to net more than two goals in a game under the German coach, however, and Scholes believes they lack a clinical edge up top and should not be a match for an in-form United who are the highest scorers in the Premier League.

Asked if United’s upcoming games – starting with Chelsea in the league – will define their season, Scholes told BT Sport: ‘It will yeah, but you’ve got to play these teams if you’re going to be successful – and you’ve got to beat them.

‘They have really struggled in big games.

‘Chelsea away, I watched Chelsea yesterday I thought they were okay but they were a little bit toothless in the final third.

‘Look, I think United don’t have that much to worry about with Chelsea.

‘I think they’ll be okay there, especially away from home their record is brilliant.

‘The one game there obviously you worry about is Manchester City [on March 7]. They’re playing so well, 10 points clear at the top of the league, such a brilliant squad of players in fine form.

‘That will be tricky, but they’re capable of doing it. I look at the other games I think they’re capable of winning all of them.’

Although City are currently 10 points clear at the top of the Premier League table, Scholes does not believe the title race is over just yet – especially if United can go on a winning run over the coming weeks.
