Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has labelled Scott McTominay a ‘monster of a human being’ after the midfielder’s header earned Manchester United a 1-0 win over Watford.

United edged past the Championship at Old Trafford on Saturday night side to book their place in the fourth round of the FA Cup.

McTominay, who captained his side for the first time on the night, put the Red Devils ahead after just five minutes with a bouncing header from Alex Telles’ corner.

It was far from a vintage display from United, but Solskjaer’s much-changed side from the team that lost to Manchester City in midweek got the job done.

McTominay continued his fine form this campaign with another standout performance as he took his goal tally to four for the season across all competitions.

Speaking to BBC Match of the Day after the game, Solskjaer was full of praise for the Scotland international.

‘Scott has had a very good season,’ Solskjaer told BBC Match of the Day.

‘He is being more and more dangerous, we know he can be a box-to-box midfielder.

‘He should have scored a few more on set-plays before now because he is a monster of a human being. I am very happy he got the goal.’

United academy graduate McTominay was handed the captain’s armband until Harry Maguire came on for the injured Eric Bailly just before half-time.

And Solskjaer was impressed with the way in which the midfielder handled the responsibility.

‘He did [deliver] he always does,’ the Norwegian boss told BT Sport. ‘He’s a leader but I thought maybe today we give it to him to see how he reacts wearing the armband. He’s always out there leading the way but brilliant today.

‘We’ve always trusted our young men coming through and Scott is one of them that we really believe has got the DNA of Man United in him and he knows what it is to be a Man United player.’
