Manchester United midfielder Bruno Fernandes rates Paul Scholes above fellow Premier League legends Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard.

Scholes, Lampard and Gerrard are considered three of the greatest midfielders England have ever produced but Fernandes reckons Scholes was the best of the lot.

During his 20-year stint at Old Trafford, Scholes helped Manchester United win 11 Premier League titles, two Champions League and three FA Cups.

Chelsea manager Lampard also enjoyed incredible success during his playing career, lifting the Premier League three times at Stamford Bridge and also bagging the Champions League and multiple FA Cups.

Gerrard famously never managed to win the Premier League with Liverpool but is still regarded as the best player in the club’s history and won the Champions League in 2005.

Speaking on the Utd podcast, Fernandes said: ‘I think Scholes was one of the best midfielders in the world.

‘For England, a lot of people talk about Frank Lampard because he scored a lot of goals of course, one of the best in England too, you have Steven Gerrard too.

‘But I think Scholes is the one who makes more difference than anyone else.

‘And before everyone starts talking about this, I haven’t seen every midfielder in England…

‘But I think in the last generation, those three were the three best ones, and for me Scholes was best.’

Fernandes has been one of Manchester United’s best players since his January move from Sporting Lisbon, but the team have struggled to find consistency under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and are currently just 14th in the Premier League.

Portugal international Fernandes was compared to a number of legends following his arrival at Old Trafford and believes his playing style is closer to Scholes than Lampard and Gerrard.

‘Maybe I’m closer to Paul Scholes than the rest of them,’ Fernandes added.

‘Scholes was a guy who likes to be in the box, who likes to give an assist, who likes to score a lot of goals.’
