Former Premier League goalkeeper Brad Friedel has delivered his prediction for this weekend’s Merseyside derby, with struggling champions Liverpool welcoming arch-rivals Everton to Anfield on Saturday.

Jurgen Klopp’s side have lost their last three matches to slip to sixth in the Premier League, 16 points behind leaders Manchester City.

Everton are two places behind Liverpool in eighth and also go into the fixture in poor form, having won just one of their last five fixtures.

Friedel, speaking exclusively to Ladbrokes at its launch of the 5-A-Side Bet on West Ham v Tottenham, said: ‘Things don’t get any easier for Liverpool, that’s for sure.

‘Judging on Liverpool’s recent form, I guess this might be one of the best chances Everton will have to beat Liverpool, but I still think Liverpool are better – even taking injuries into account.

‘There’ll be opportunities in this fixture for Liverpool to really dominate and comfortably win the game. Everton are also a good side, but Liverpool are favourites in my opinion.

‘I could see Everton getting a goal, but I think Liverpool win this one 3-1.’

Klopp conceded defeat in the Premier League title race following Liverpool’s loss to Leicester City last weekend and Friedel says he has been ‘so surprised’ by the Reds’ form.

‘I’m so surprised by Liverpool this season,’ he added.

‘I knew Man City would come back and challenge for the title this year after the season they had last time out.

‘But I’m so surprised how far ahead City are this year. The points swing has been enormous. The centre-halve problem has really decimated Liverpool’s season.

‘What Jurgen Klopp has done at Liverpool over the last few years has been incredible. He’s by far one of the best managers in the game.

‘I think they’ve just got to a point in the season where injuries have taken their toll and confidence has taken a beating.

‘I still think they can go on a run of unbeaten games and I think their front three is the best in the world, but it’s just one of those things.

‘It’s not too dissimilar to how Man City’s season went last year. I’ve no doubt Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool will be very strong next year.’
