Liverpool news: Sepp van den Berg to leave on loan despite defensive injury crisis

Liverpool are happy to let centre-back Sepp van den Berg leave the club on loan this month, despite the string of injuries they have suffered in the position.

The Reds have been hit hard in the middle of defence this campaign, losing Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez for the majority of the season, while Joel Matip has continually picked up minor injuries.

Fabinho is currently the mainstay at centre-back, while youngsters Nat Phillips and Rhys Williams have been drafted in, and even Jordan Henderson filling in at centre-back.

Despite the problems the Premier League champions have, 19-year-old Van den Berg is clearly not seen as a solution as the Reds are happy to let him go out on loan for the rest of the season.

Goal report that talks have already been held over a short-term switch for the teenager, with clubs in Germany, Belgium, Switzerland and England all interested.

Blackburn, who currently have another Liverpool youngster, Harvey Elliott, on loan, have made an enquiry for the big Dutchman.

Van den Berg arrived at Anfield in 2019 from PEC Zwolle for around £1.3m in a low-key move, although the Reds had fought off significant competition from Bayern Munich to get their man.

He is yet to make a Premier League appearance for Jurgen Klopp’s side, but has made four first team outings, one in the FA Cup and three in the EFL Cup.

Klopp has always had positive things to say about Van den Berg, but admits that game time is hard to come by.

‘For Sepp it is always hard for centre-halves,’ Klopp said shortly after the Dutchman arrived at the club. ‘We have four, so sitting outside [but] he looks really promising in training sessions.’

Liverpool and the player will come to a decision in the coming days, with all concerned keen to ensure the defender goes where he is most likely to get regular game time.

The timescale for Van Dijk or Gomez to return is still unclear and they are not expected back any time soon, while Matip could be back in action this weekend.
