Former Chelsea and Arsenal full-back Ashley Cole has given Trent Alexander-Arnold some invaluable tactical advice after the Liverpool ace came in for stinging criticism after his side’s 3-1 defeat to Real Madrid.

The England right-back looked shaky throughout the defeat to Zinedine Zidane’s side and was to blame for Marco Asensio’s goal, as he misguided a header back to Alisson for the Spaniard to put the hosts 2-0 up.

Alexander-Arnold was left out of England’s recent squad after a below-par campaign for the Reds and many felt the defender was back to his best after an impressive display in a 3-0 win against Arsenal on Saturday.

However, Alexander-Arnold’s frailties were there for all to see and he was targeted by Madrid in the Spanish capital on Tuesday night.

Cole is widely regarded as England’s greatest ever left-back and the former Chelsea ace believes Alexander-Arnold needs to hone his body shape and positioning if he’s to correct his mistakes.

Commenting on a video of Jamie Carragher discussing the Liverpool star’s defending, Cole said: ‘The area he can improve would be his feet patterns-movements which allows him to turn and match his opponents run or dribble.

‘If you cannot move them quick enough it doesn’t matter how fast you are you will get beat.

‘Foot patterns will get you in defensive positions to turn quick.’

Liverpool’s defeat means they need to win by at least two clear goals in the return leg at Anfield to progress to the semi-finals.

The Reds have renewed hope of finishing in the top four after dropped points from Leicester City and Chelsea last weekend, though they remain in 7th.

Liverpool take on Aston Villa at Anfield this weekend, with Dean Smith’s side five points behind the Reds having played a game less.
