Jose Mourinho annoyed after Dele Alli ‘creates problems’ for Spurs in Stoke win

Dele Alli returned to the Tottenham Hotspur starting XI on Wednesday night in the Carabao Cup quarter-final, but manager Jose Mourinho was not especially happy with the midfielder’s performance.

The England international was making his first start since 26 November and it came in a 3-1 victory over Stoke City to book a spot in the semi-finals, where Spurs will take on Brentford.

It was a rare chance for Alli to prove his worth to Mourinho, who has taken him out of first team action for much of this season, but it looks like he failed to do so.

The 24-year-old gave the ball away in the build-up to Stoke equalising early in the second half and was substituted in the 66th minute, before Ben Davies and Harry Kane goals secured the win.

Mourinho was still bothered by Alli giving the ball away after the match and felt that he was creating problems for his side.

‘A player in that position is a player that has to link and create and not to create problems for his own team,’ said Mourinho.

‘In that situation, an objective counter-attack would probably end with a goal, and it ended with a counter-attack behind our defenders.

‘We were unbalanced because when you are in possession you have full-backs out wide and another midfielder in a different line and they caught us in a counter-attack and they transformed the result of the game that was totally in our hands, so yes I am upset.’

Gareth Bale starting the game and opened the scoring, but was substituted at half-time, replaced by Heung-min Son.

However, there was no upset from Mourinho here, with the Portuguese confirming that it was due to an injury to the Welshman.

‘His decision,’ said the boss. ‘Something he felt. He told me immediately when walking to the dressing room.’

Spurs meet Brentford in the EFL Cup semis, while Manchester City and Manchester United clash in a huge derby for a place in the final.
