Jadon Sancho fumed at referee Ovidiu Hategan after Borussia Dortmund were wrongly denied a goal in their Champions League quarter-final clash against Manchester City.

England international Jude Bellingham thought he had cancelled out Kevin de Bruyne’s opener at the Etihad when he poked the ball from Man City goalkeeper Ederson and tapped into an empty net.

But referee Hategan ruled it out for a foul on Ederson and booked Bellingham. As the whistle was blown before the ball crossed the line, VAR was unable to overturn the decision and hand Dortmund a goal.

Dortmund did find an equaliser in the second half, with Marco Reus finishing off a superb team move, but Phil Foden scored in the dying stages to give Manchester City a 2-1 lead ahead of next week’s return leg.

‘This Ref needs checking!’ Sancho, who missed the match against his former club through injury, said on social media.

Speaking at half-time, former England star Owen Hargreaves told BT Sport: ‘The referee had a couple of big mistakes there. This is huge.

‘The ref has blown his whistle too early because the goal could have stood. Watch his [Bellingham’s] reaction, as a player you know.

‘The referee got it wrong and that’s a big moment in this tie. Borussia Dortmund will be furious.’

Manchester City are on the verge of winning the Premier League this season but also have aspirations in Europe as they bid to lift their first Champions League title.

A 2-1 win at the Etihad means they have one foot in the semi-finals, although they will still be wary of Dortmund, especially after they threatened to produce a comeback this evening.

Speaking after City’s victory, De Bruyne said: ‘We saw the way they played. They played really well with the ball. It causes some problems sometimes.

‘I think in the first half we had a little bit of difficulty finding the chances but in the second half we created a few.

‘We probably should have scored a little bit more but obviously when they came back to 1-1, that was a little shame but it happens.

‘I think the reaction was really good so to get the win is good. We know 2-1 is a tricky score but at least we are ahead for the second leg.’
