Jofra Archer will return to training in two weeks after undergoing successful surgery to his right hand, the England and Wales Cricket Board have confirmed.

Archer injured his hand while cleaning a fish tank at his home in January but the problem was managed by England during the recent tour of India.

Fast bowler Archer played in two of the four Tests and all five T20 matches, before being rested for the three ODIs.

The 25-year-old returned to England last week and underwent surgery on his hand on Monday.

The ECB said in a statement: ‘A fragment of glass was removed during the operation to his middle finger on his right hand.

‘He will now commence two weeks of rehabilitation. The Consultant will review him before returning to training.

‘Further update on his elbow injury will be provided once he has returned to bowling to assess the effectiveness of his recent injection.’

Archer, who plays for Indian Premier League franchise Rajasthan Royals, will now miss the start of the 2021 IPL campaign, which runs from 9 April to 30 May.

The England bowler was one of the stars of the 2020 IPL, taking 20 wickets in 14 matches at an economy rate of less than seven.

Discussing Archer’s injury, England director of cricket told BBC Radio 5 Live this week: ‘This is going to sound like an awful conspiracy and I know what’s going to happen on Twitter straight away when I say this.

‘But it’s true, it’s not a conspiracy, it was a fish tank. He was cleaning at home [when it happened].

‘He’s been in surgery today [Monday] and he’s come out of it well. They’ve operated and actually I think they found a small fragment of glass still in the tendon.

‘So it was the right thing to do, we’ve got a clear window to do it as well, so obviously we wish him the best for his recovery.’

Archer will be a key player for England during the rest of 2021, with Eoin Morgan’s white-ball team attempting to win the T20 World Cup and Joe Root’s Test side bidding to reclaim the Ashes and beat India at home.
