Virat Kohli has explained why AB de Villiers was pushed down Royal Challengers Bangalore’s batting order during their Indian Premier League defeat to Kings XI Punjab.

South Africa hero De Villiers made a brilliant 73* from number four in RCB’s victory over Kolkata Knight Riders last week.

The 36-year-old was surprisingly demoted to No. 6 for Bangalore’s clash against Kings XI on Thursday and made just two from five balls as RCB posted 171-6.

That proved a competitive score but Kings XI Punjab clinched victory off the final ball of the game with West Indies star Nicholas Pooran hitting Yuzvendra Chahal for a maximum.

Explaining why De Villiers was pushed down the order, Kohli said: ‘We had a chat, a message from outside about left-right combinations and we wanted to go with it because they had two leggies.

‘Sometimes things don’t come off. We’re pretty happy with the decisions we took, but it didn’t come off.’

Kohli added: ‘It was a good performance by Kings XI Punjab, we were not in the game tonight.

‘Making 170 was a decent effort. It’s not a great ground for bowlers but that’s not an excuse. We take pride in our bowling and it didn’t come off.

‘We have to accept it and take responsibility.’

Kings XI Punjab captain KL Rahul, meanwhile, said: ‘I don’t even have words. We knew that we had to scrap and get over the line and that can give us confidence.

‘We’re a far better side than bottom of the table. Towards the end it got too close for comfort but I’m happy we made it.’
