Ian Wright sends warning to wasteful Chelsea star Timo Werner

Ian Wright has warned Chelsea they cannot afford to be so ‘wasteful’ in front of goal if they hope to challenge for the Premier League title this season after Timo Werner was particularly culpable during Saturday’s comfortable 2-0 win over Newcastle.

Frank Lampard’s side moved, temporarily, to the top of the table after an early own goal from Federico Fernandez and a second half clincher from Tammy Abraham sealed another three points.

Chelsea missed several opportunities to make life easier for themselves at St James’ Park with Werner squandering a simple chance from eight yards out in the opening period and failing to provide Hakim Ziyech with a tap-in by misplacing an easy pass after the break.

Reflecting on Chelsea’s performance, Wright told the BBC: ‘It was very comfortable for Chelsea right from the start.

‘It could’ve been too comfortable there and like Frank said they missed chances and they need to be a lot more ruthless if they are going to go on and get into that top four, or really challenge simply because it could have been a lot easier than it was.

‘You can go to a place like Newcastle and if you are that wasteful they can get you and come back and maybe nick one.

‘I think today I thought Tammy was a lot better with his movement and got his goal in the end and Timo Werner he was kind of wasteful with the kind of chances that we know he normally will take. But other than that it could’ve been a lot more comfortable.’

Despite the misses, Werner linked up well with Abraham throughout and the pair combined superbly for the England international’s third goal in his last three Chelsea appearances.

On Werner’s best position, Wright added: I think that suits Timo coming from there, coming from deep.

‘You saw with Tammy’s goal he went past the defenders like they weren’t there, he set Tammy up and he finished well. He seems to play off a front man better.’
