Hakim Ziyech and Timo Werner can make Chelsea a ‘powerful’ force this season, says Cesc Fabregas

Former Chelsea star Cesc Fabregas has hailed summer arrivals Hakim Ziyech and Timo Werner and believes the duo can combine to make the side a serious attacking force this season.

Chelsea made up for lost time in the wake of their two-window transfer ban and Ziyech became the first new addition as a £36million agreement was reached with Ajax for the attacking midfielder back in February.

Werner was next to sign on the dotted line after the Blues struck a £47.5m deal with Leipzig for the striker and Kai Havertz, Ben Chilwell, Thiago Silva and Edouard Mendy soon followed the German through the doors at Stamford Bridge.

And Chelsea appear to reaping the rewards of their big spending, winning four games on the bounce before the international break. The west London club are also unbeaten in their last eight matches in all competitions and both Ziyech and Werner have been integral to their recent success.

Ziyech became the first player since Diego Costa to score in his first two starts for Chelsea and the Moroccan assisted both Ben Chilwell and Thiago Silva as Frank Lampard’s men beat Sheffield United last weekend.

Werner, meanwhile, is in red-hot form after a slow start, netting seven times in his last seven appearances for the Blues.

Asked about Ziyech’s impact, ex-Chelsea midfielder Fabregas told 90min: ‘He has this vision that you need in a top team like Chelsea who wants to win and be champions.

‘It’s true that they were a team a little bit lacking ideas in the last season and maybe at the beginning of this season.

‘But yeah, with Ziyech, you can see that he has this last pass and it’s not only that he sees it, it’s that he makes it right and at the right time.

‘This is the decision-making we talk about nowadays. Why are coaches so tactical? Because they see that the decision-making of the players is not that good so they need to teach them always what to do.

‘You know, before, I believe coaches were not so much on top of the player because they felt maybe that there wasn’t so much need because they felt maybe that there wasn’t so much need because already the players sort it by themselves.’

Fabregas added: ‘I think he’s one of these players that makes things happen.

‘Things that, when the defenders or the centre-backs don’t expect you to make that pass and you catch them sleeping.

‘And you have someone like Timo Werner making great runs in behind and I think this is where Chelsea could be so powerful this year.’

Lampard heaped praise on Ziyech’s performance after Chelsea’s emphatic 4-1 victory over Sheffield United and claimed the attacking midfielder had added ‘magic’ and ‘quality’ which the team were perhaps lacking last season.

‘Maybe there’s some more to come, he hasn’t played games for a long time and off the back of an injury he’s hit the ground running,’ he told Chelsea TV.

‘But his work ethic has been great, his desire to win the ball back for a modern-day winger is imperative to the press.

‘The magic, the bit you want from him when you bring him in, is that quality of breaking a line or finding a cross.

‘I wanted him to bring something different and he’s clearly brought that in these early stages and hopefully we can keep working on that.’
