Giorgio Chiellini has revealed Cristiano Ronaldo feels ‘fine’ despite testing positive for coronavirus and claims his superstar Juventus team-mate was sunbathing when they spoke on the phone.

Ronaldo, 35, has been forced to self-isolate at Portugal’s team hotel, meaning he will be absent for side’s Nations League clash with Sweden this evening.

Every other member of Fernando Santos’ squad returned negative tests and have been given the all clear to feature in Lisbon.

Guidelines in Italy state that an individual who has tested positive for Covid-19 must spend between 10-21 days in quarantine until they record a negative test.

This means Ronaldo will likely have to sit out Juve’s Serie A match versus Crotone this weekend and the iconic attacker could also be in danger of missing their much-anticipated Champions League tie with Barcelona at the end of the month.

However, it appears the five-time Ballon d’Or winner remains in good spirits and will be using the self-isolation period to relax.

‘Ronaldo? I called him, he was fine. He was sunbathing,’ Juventus captain Chiellini told the media ahead of Italy’s encounter with the Netherlands.

‘We footballers know that we face risks and we are ready to take them, trying to minimise them with all the necessary precautions.

‘We are not surprised by this escalation of cases. We must move forward because we know that football is an important business, and because of the social value we know it has: in the coming weeks there will be other restrictions, and I think football is important for the people.’

Asked whether he’s ‘worried’ about the current situation, Chiellini replied: ‘We are not but certainly it’s a distracting topic.

‘However, I’m of the opinion that we must go on.’

Portugal head coach Santos reassured supporters that Ronaldo was ‘managing the situation very well’ and said the Juventus striker was not suffering with any symptoms of the virus.

‘No team can be better without the best player in the world but this team has already demonstrated that, collectively, it has the capacity to tackle the situation,’ he said ahead of Portugal’s clash with Sweden.

‘He is managing the situation very well. He is in the room, saying he wants to play, he talks to us from upstairs [from his balcony].

‘He is completely asymptomatic, he is okay, without any symptoms, he doesn’t even know what happened to him.’

Asked how his team will cope without their talisman, Santos replied: ‘Any player who is absent due to Covid-19 is a big loss, and Ronaldo’s absence is probably even greater [than anyone else’s].

‘But I have absolute confidence in those players who are going to play.

The plan is the same. But the dynamics are different. Cristiano has his own characteristics.

‘No team is better without the best player in the world. But this team have already shown that they have the ability to respond as a collective. I have full confidence in my players.’
