Gary Anderson labels Wayne Mardle a ‘numpty’ after comments on Mensur Suljovic clash

Gary Anderson still has a bee in his bonnet following his win over Mensur Suljovic in the third round of the PDC World Darts Championship, labelling Sky Sports commentator Wayne Mardle a ‘numpty’ for his comments on the match.

Anderson is into the quarter-finals at Alexandra Palace after beating Devon Petersen 4-0 on Wednesday afternoon, but his thoughts are still with his third round victory over Suljovic.

The big Austrian had tried to put Anderson off his rhythm by slowing him right down in that contest, something he was successful at doing, but he also managed to ruin his own game and came up short.

The Flying Scotsman was visibly annoyed by the tactics and threatened to quit the sport if he had to deal with them again.

The two-time world champion was not just annoyed by the slow play, but also that Suljovic had apparently been using the wrong table during the match, something that Mardle couldn’t get his head round.

The former World Championship semi-finalist felt Anderson showed something of a fragile temperament with his reaction and encouraged other players to try similar tactics against him.

‘If you want to give him a game or just annoy him. He’s got Jason Lowe or Devon Petersen, whoever wins just go to the wrong table, joke and keep going to the wrong table,’ Mardle said on Sky Sports. ‘If his mind’s going to go that quickly, he’s clearly not in a good space.

‘He’s clearly not concentrating on the game. Normally that wouldn’t bother him, I feel sure about that. What bothered him was the pace of Mensur, I think it was just a bit of I’ll deflect that.’

Anderson’s comfortable win over Petersen saw no tactics involved as he strolled into the quarter-finals, but his previous contest was still on his mind in the post-match press conference.

‘I play darts, if the boy’s better than me, I’m still going to play darts against him,’ said the 50-year-old.

‘Wayne Mardle’s comment the other night, saying if you’re playing a player then you need to put him off, slow him down. That’s coming from a commentator on Sky!

‘My way of playing darts is you go up there, if he hits a ton you hit a 140, he hits a 140 you hit a 180. Pressure them, try to outscore them, out finish them.

‘Now Wayne’s telling everyone that if you’ve got a problem with a player, slow them down, or do what you can to put them off.

‘What a numpty. That’s absolutely great for television and it’s a great thing to tell kids what to do. Proud of you Wayne.’

Anderson then included other former players on the Sky team, saying they would not be condoning the tactics if it was a game they were involved in.

‘Wayne Mardle, Rod Harrington, Mark Webster have all played darts,’ he said. ‘I’ve seen them kicking off because somebody’s done something to them.

‘If they’d been up there playing they’d have been a hell of a lot worse than what I was, tryst me on that one.

‘I’ve heard their comments, I don’t think a lot about them, but it’s a great way to tell the public how to play darts. I’m proud of you.’

Anderson returns to the oche on Friday in his quarter-final clash with either Dirk van Duijvenbode or Glen Durrant.
