Frank Lampard has told Callum Hudson-Odoi that he will be starting in Chelsea’s clash against Aston Villa on Monday.

Chelsea sank to a 3-1 defeat to Arsenal on Boxing Day following a woeful performance at the Etihad Stadium.

Goals from Alexandre Lacazette, Granit Xhaka and Bukayo Saka gave Mikel Arteta’s side a commanding lead before Tammy Abraham struck late on to provide a lifeline for Chelsea.

Jorginho then missed a penalty to scupper Chelsea’s chances of a comeback, while the result leaves Lampard’s side six points behind Liverpool, who hose West Brom on Sunday.

Hudson-Odoi was brought on for the ineffective Timo Werner at half time in Chelsea’s loss to Arsenal and Lampard admits the 20-year-old’s impressive second-half display has earned him a place in the team for the trip to Villa Park.

‘Callum did really well,’ Lampard told Chelsea TV.

‘And I hope people’s eyes aren’t drawn to Jorgi’s penalty because Jorginho also offered a lot when he came on in terms of driving the game and getting on the ball more.

‘Callum was fantastic with his energy. That’s what we absolutely needed.

‘That’s why he’ll play in the next game and if Callum plays like that he can be a serious player.

‘It’s more clarified in my head [the team selection against Villa], some players will need to come in to add energy, to add mentality.

‘N’Golo [Kante] I brought off with a little bit that in mind because of how important he is for us and that stage in the game.

‘But I’ll have to see how the next 24 hours go.’
