Frank Lampard has urged caution ahead of Hakim Ziyech’s debut for Chelsea as he insists the midfielder still needs regular playing time to hit top form.

Ziyech was signed in a £33.3 million deal from Ajax in February and officially completed his move to Chelsea in the summer.

But the 27-year-old suffered an early setback after he injured his knee during a pre-season friendly against Brighton at the end of August.

Ziyech was unable to make his debut for Chelsea before the international break but he impressed during a 30-minute cameo for Morocco last Friday.

Lampard has also been pleased with Ziyech’s performances in training and says he is ‘excited’ for the midfielder to finally get a run in the Chelsea team.

‘Obviously, we brought Hakim here and it feels a long time ago now,’ said Lampard.

‘But he also has not played since the Dutch league finished during the lockdown period, it’s a long time.

‘He’s worked so hard, he’s been fantastic in terms of his professionalism to get fit, and looks really good in training.

‘It’s match fitness, I’ve got a really open relationship with him to know where he’s at and how I feel about it. So it’s just game minutes what we need now.

‘But yes, of course, I’m really excited to get him in and around it. To bring what we brought him to the club for, which is the opportunity to create chances for us, to be the talented player that he is that we saw at Ajax. I look forward to seeing him play.’

Ziyech is expected to make his first appearance for Chelsea this weekend as Lampard’s side host Southampton at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.
