Former Chelsea boss Frank Lampard will be on the shortlist to become England Under-21s next manager, according to reports.

Aidy Boothroyd is expected to leave his role this summer when his contract expires and the Football Association is considering its options.

England have delivered two woeful performances at the European Under-21 Championship during the international break, and the 2-0 defeat to Portugal on Sunday means Boothroyd’s side are on the brink of elimination at the group stage.

According to MailOnline, Lampard will be among the names considered as a potential candidate to replace Boothroyd.

And the report claims that Lampard has admirers within the FA for the work he has done at Derby County and Chelsea.

Lampard is currently out of work after he was sacked by Chelsea at the end of January.

The 42-year-old left Stamford Bridge with the team ninth in the Premier League and having won once in five league games.

Steve Cooper, who guided England Under-17s to victory at the World Cup in 2017, is also on the shortlist alongside Paul Simpson, whose England Under-20 side won the World Cup in 2017.
