Ex-Chelsea ace Thibaut Courtois taunts Gareth Bale over Spurs move

Former Chelsea goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois could not resist a cheeky dig at Gareth Bale after he joined Tottenham Hotspur on loan.

Courtois, Bale’s team-mate at Real Madrid, is a big admirer of the Wales international and views him as a ‘great player’.

Bale enjoyed a remarkable stint in the Spanish capital, winning four Champions Leagues, two La Liga titles, the Copa del Rey and three Club World Cups during a glittering seven year spell at the Santiago Bernabeu.

His playing time has been limited since Zinedine Zidane returned to the Real dugout, however, and he decided to leave Madrid in order to return to his former club Spurs on a temporary basis.

Courtois wished the 31-year-old luck as he prepares for a return to Premier League action but his Chelsea alleigances shone through as he claimed he is ‘not playing for the good London team’.

‘What Bale talked about with the coach is personal,’ Courtois told El Larguero.

‘I don’t know what he thought, but then they are decisions that each one makes.

‘I had a good relationship with Gareth and I wish him the best of luck this year, even if he’s not playing for the good London team.

‘He is a great player.’

Courtois, 28, joined Chelsea in 2011 – although he spent the first three years on loan with Atletico Madrid – and won two Premier League titles under Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte as well as the FA Cup.

He was sold to Real Madrid – where he has won La Liga and the Club World Cup – in 2018 and was soon followed by fellow former Chelsea ace Eden Hazard.

His fellow Belgium international has struggled to reproduce the form that saw him become one of the most feared attackers on the planet during his time in Madrid, but Courtois is confident that will change this season.

‘Eden is the first one who wants to prove it, Courtois added.

‘Before his injury in November last year, he had two or three games very well and had bad luck.

‘I see him training very well and I’m sure that in no time he will explode and give the team a lot of joy.’
