Manchester United officials told Edinson Cavani they want him to stay during showdown talks on Tuesday – but the striker is said to have major concerns about his playing time if he were to remain at the club.

Eyebrows were raised as the Red Devils brought in Cavani, 34, on a free transfer last summer given the forward’s age and his lack of first-team football in his final few months with Paris Saint-Germain.

But Cavani has made a big impression on the younger members of the United dressing room and has proven himself to be a valuable addition to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s attack when fit, notching up six goals and two assists in the Premier League this season.

However, there has been mounting speculation that Cavani has struggled to settle in the north west and his father, Luis, appeared to confirm these rumours in an explosive interview with TyC Sports earlier this month.

Cavani’s time in England has not been without controversy either. Back in November, he hit the headlines for all the wrong reasons after being charged by the FA for using a racial term in an Instagram post.

The ex-Napoli and PSG star therefore looks likely to depart at the end of June when his one-year deal expires but, according to The Daily Mail, United have not yet given up hope of extending the Uruguayan’s stay at Old Trafford beyond the summer.

It’s claimed United’s newly-appointed director of football, John Murtough, and executive vice chairman, Ed Woodward, held showdown talks with the player at at around midday on Tuesday at Carrington.

Solskjaer has been impressed with Cavani’s attitude both on and off the pitch and has repeatedly underlined his desire to keep hold of the veteran attacker.

But the United head coach would understand if Cavani ultimately decides he’s keen to take on another fresh challenge in the twilight of his career, with discussions reportedly in place for him to join Boca Juniors.

United have been honest with Cavani that they will look to bring in a marquee signing up front in the summer transfer window and the report suggests the Uruguay international is worried about his first-team opportunities should he stay put.

Uruguay assistant manager Mario Rebollo said the player’s happiness should come first when asked about the intense speculation surrounding the centre-forward’s future earlier this week.

‘The priority is that he plays where he is comfortable and where he’s playing at a good competitive level,’ he told reporters.

‘If it’s close to here it would be great but only if he’s comfortable.

‘It would be good for us if Cavani plays where he feels most comfortable.

‘I don’t care if it’s Boca or another place, we have to have him with rhythm and strong competition.’
