Dustin Johnson beat a record set by Tiger Woods by recording the lowest score in Masters history to claim victory at Augusta.

Woods scored 270 over 72 holes when he claimed his first green jacket in 1997 and Jordan Spieth matched the record in 2015 when he finished 18-under in Georgia.

But Johnson eclipsed both as he cruised to victory, finishing 20-under par with a final round 68. After a nervy start on Sunday morning, the American bounced back to add to his US Open victory from 2016 to take his Majors tally to two.

The World number one had a four-shot overnight lead going into the final round but his advantage was halved after back-to-back bogies on the fourth and fifth, giving the likes of Cameron Smith and Sung-Jae Im a look-in,

Johnson has an unfortunate track record of blowing leads at Majors, having led going into the final day on four occasions only to end up empty-handed.

His start to the final round must have brought negative memories flooding back but the 37-year-old showed outstanding mental strength to recover his composure through the back nine.

The American recorded consecutive birdies on the 13th, 14th and 15th to become the first player to go 20 under at Augusta in the history of the tournament.

Johnson’s competition failed to make inroads, allowing him to extend his lead to five shots as he entered the 18th.

While no official spectators were present to witness history, a throng of club members circled the 18th as Johnson kept his nerve to hold par on the final hole to finish 20 under.

The Masters – Final Leaderboard

1 – Dustin Johnson (-20)

2 – Cameron Smith (-15)

T2 – Sung-Jae Im (-15)

4 – Justin Thomas (-12)

5 – Rory McIlroy (-11)

Johnson has finished in the top-10 four times at Augusta, most notably in 2019 when he tied second with Brooks Koepka and Xander Schauffele as Tiger Woods got his hands on a fifth green jacket.

But it was Woods handing over the green jacket this time around at an unprecedented Masters tournament.
