Former Manchester United striker Dimitar Berbatov fears his side could be dragged into a race for the top four, just weeks after threatening to mount a Premier League title challenge.

United were top of the league a month ago but the club have picked up just 11 points from their last eight matches, seeing them drop seven points behind leaders Manchester City having played a game more.

With the title looking unlikely, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side will look to pick up silverware in the FA Cup and Europa League.

However, Berbatov fears that his former side now face a genuine race to finish in the Champions League places.

‘If United continue to keep dropping unnecessary points to weaker teams I’m going to be worried for them making the top four,’ Berbatov told Betfair.

‘When you are challenging for the title it is unacceptable to drop points against the team that is bottom of the table and then the team second bottom of the table.

‘Yes, you may drop points against the likes of City and Liverpool, when there is so much quality on the pitch but playing against teams down the table, you have to take the points otherwise you bring lots of problems on yourself.

‘United must kick on, because they risk teams catching them and each week the race for a top four spot is getting tighter.’

United will now be looking after their shoulder, given there’s just four points between themselves and West Ham in fith.

Champions Liverpool are currently in sixth and remain favourites to take one of the three positions behind City, meaning United, Leicester, West Ham, Chelsea, Everton and Spurs will be competing for the final two spots.

Chelsea are currently in third, with the Blues picking up four wins and one draw in their five league matches since Thomas Tuchel’s appointment.
