Bayern Munich defender David Alaba has confirmed he will be on the move in the summer, with several clubs in talks with his agent over a possible free transfer.

Alaba is among the most decorated players in Bayern’s history after helping them win nine back-to-back Bundesliga titles and two Champions League trophies since breaking into the first-team in 2010.

But the versatile 28-year-old – who can operate at left-back, centre-back and in midfield – is keen for a fresh challenge next season and has allowed his contract to run down at the Allianz Arena.

The Austria defender addressed the media at a press conference on Tuesday

Real Madrid have long been linked but Thomas Tuchel is also an admirer and has encouraged Chelsea to make a move for Alaba as he looks to the transfer market to bolster his defensive options.

However, the Blues are reluctant to satisfy Alaba’s eye-watering £20million-a-year wage demands and it’s understood Madrid remain clear favourites for the Austrian’s signature ahead of the summer transfer window.

Asked about his future at a press conference on Tuesday, Alaba told reporters: ‘I have decided to do something new. It wasn’t an easy decision.

‘I have not yet made the decision where to go.

‘I have personally decided to see something new, to look for a new challenge. That certainly took its time.’

The Austria international added: ‘It’s no secret that my agent is negotiating with other teams.

‘I am looking for a new challenge to develop myself as a person on and off the pitch.

‘Where can I continue to play football successfully? That will certainly be important in my decision.’

Alaba insisted his decision to quit Bayern was never motivated by a desire for more money.

‘Money wasn’t a factor for me. A lot was interpreted from the outside,’ he continued.

‘I couldn’t say much from my side because we had a lot of games. It’s a difficult phase with communication.

‘My management is in talks, I get information and don’t worry.’

Bayern confirmed that they had completed a deal for Leipzig’s Dayot Upamecano at the weekend and Alaba was full of praise for the France centre-back.

‘He has a lot of talent and potential,’ he went on.

‘He is strong, builds play well and he is a player that has evolved a lot in recent years.

‘Lucas Hernandez also has a lot of potential and is very important for the team both on and off the field. Bayern are very well stocked in defence.’
