Dana White explains why he was ‘really upset’ with Conor McGregor last year

UFC president Dana White admits that he was ‘really upset’ with Conor McGregor last year after the Irishman publicised a private conversation they had, but now the pair are getting on well again.

McGregor was pushing to make a fight last summer and suggested taking on veteran campaigner Diego Sanchez, a bout which White had absolutely no interest in making.

The Notorious tweeted the conversation he had with White via text, which the UFC boss said at the time broke ‘man code’.

‘Everybody here knows, even the ladies, this is some man code stuff, you know? It’s just something you don’t do. It’s one of the dirtiest things you can do,’ White said after UFC 253.

‘We were just talking about Diego Sanchez. Diego Sanchez is in there in a private conversation I was having with Conor.

‘When you’re the number two or three ranked guy in the world and you’re telling me you want to fight but you want to fight unranked, 39-year-old Diego Sanchez in a main event in Los Angeles – no.’

White has now explained just how much McGregor’s actions harmed their relationship, largely due to how disrespectful it appeared towards Sanchez.

‘We were in a really bad place then,’ White told ESPN. ‘I was really upset.

‘It wasn’t because he put out private messages. But we were talking about another fighter and I like Diego Sanchez a lot and I have a lot of respect for Diego Sanchez. I care about Diego Sanchez. So I was very upset about that.

‘I talked to Diego face-to-face about it. Being the great human being that he is, [it’s] all good and then I was really, really upset with Conor. Conor, I fixed that, we talked and we got through it and we’re in a good place now.’

A fight between McGregor and Sanchez is never going to happen in the UFC, despite both men claiming they want it to.

Sanchez has one more fight on his UFC contract, having competed for the company since 2005, and he admits he doesn’t know who it will be against.

The Nightmare tweeted: ‘It’s my last fight my heart path has changed, it’s time to heal not hurt! One more Nightmare to give! It is honestly in @danawhite hands who I fight, I have no choice in it nor do the match makers #endofanera’

McGregor certainly has other things to worry about, with his rematch with Dustin Poirier at UFC 257 less than two weeks away on 23 January in Abu Dhabi.
