Christian Pulisic admits Chelsea made ‘simple mistakes’ during the shock defeat to West Brom and has called on his team-mates to ‘recharge’ ahead of their Champions League quarter-final tie with Porto.

Thomas Tuchel, who replaced Frank Lampard in January, suffered his first defeat as Blues boss on Saturday as Premier League relegation-battlers West Brom clinched a surprise 5-2 win at Stamford Bridge.

Pulisic put the hosts ahead midway through the first half but shortly after Chelsea were reduced to ten men as Thiago Silva was sent off for two yellow cards.

West Brom raced into a 4-1 lead after the break and, despite Mason Mount giving his side hope, Sam Allardyce’s side overwhelmed ten-man Chelsea to end the 14-man unbeaten start to Tuchel’s tenure.

Chelsea were brilliant before the international break but Pulisic refused to blame the time away on his side’s poor display in west London.

‘I don’t want to say that,’ said Pulisic, who was subbed off in the second half due to a hamstring complaint.

‘It was a tough first half for us, we can’t do that to ourselves. We made some simple mistakes that we wouldn’t usually make and obviously a red card changes the complexion of a game.

‘But overall we made it really tough for ourselves. You never want to go down to ten men in football, it’s never easy in that situation.

‘You have to give West Brom credit though, they played really well today and were positive in their attacking actions.’

Chelsea do not have much time to lick their wounds as they face Porto in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final tie on Wednesday night.

‘It’s a big test of our mentality now. We’ve got some really big games coming up,’ USA international Pulisic added.

‘We’ve been in good form prior to the international break and obviously we’ve come back and lost one game.

‘We can’t dwell on that because we have a lot to play for in both the Premier League and the Champions League.

‘We have to recharge now, refocus and regroup and come back strong and ready for the next game.’

Tuchel’s Chelsea beat La Liga leaders Atletico Madrid in the last round of the Champions League, while Porto pulled off an upset to knock out Italian giants Juventus.
