Chelsea boss Frank Lampard says Kai Havertz’s potential is huge and that the attacker can go up several more levels after his goal against Morecambe in the FA Cup.

The Blues progressed to the fourth round with a comprehensive 4-0 win against the League Two side, with goals from Havertz, Timo Werner, Mason Mount and Callum Hudson-Odoi.

It was a morale-boosting afternoon for the likes of Werner and Havertz, who have both struggled since their big money moves to Stamford Bridge.

Havertz contracted coronavirus earlier in the season and Lampard says the German has been suffering from the after-effects of the virus for the last two months.

However, Lampard now believes the former Bayer Leverkusen ace is ready to kick-on at Stamford Bridge.

‘I think the level is high. I think there are numerous levels that Kai can go up because of the potential of him as a player. He’s young and been here a short period, it’s unfortunate that he had Covid and suffered a bit coming back from that,’ said Lampard.

‘Today I saw him and throughout the week in training looking fitter, stronger and there are levels to go up for Kai. We have to remain patient because he’s come here and has a huge amount of talent.

‘But you have to get accustomed to the league and the pace of the league. We as a club must support him because he’s an important player for now and the future. It was a small step in the big picture but a step made in a good way.’

Chelsea take on local rivals Fulham on Friday as Lampard’s men look to regain form in the Premier League.

The Blues have dropped to ninth in the table, with Lampard coming under increased pressure from both inside and outside the club.

Andriy Shevchenko, Thomas Tuchel and Max Allegri have been linked with becoming Lampard’s replacement, though the threat to his job is not thought to be immediate at this moment in time.
